The turn-of-the-century painter's highly unique canvases are distinctly modern and rendered with bold, yet feathery brushstrokes of pure color. This oil exemplifies his late style, encompassing the influences of major artists of the period such as Paul Cézanne, Henri Matisse and Georges Seurat. Petitjean's use of complementary colors to create a vibrant composition of color and light makes this work stand out as an important example of the Post-Impressionist style. Born in 1854 in Mâcon, Petitjean traveled to Paris in 1872 to study at the École des Beaux-Arts and in the atelier of Academic master Alexandre Cabanel. However, he soon fell under the influence of Pointillist Georges Seurat, whom Petitjean met in 1884. The two artists became close friends, and Petitjean began to experiment with the Pointillist technique that Seurat heralded. By 1891, Petitjean was showing with the Salon des Artistes Indépendants. Petitjean was very successful during his lifetime, exhibiting in Brussels, Berlin, Weimar and Wiesbaden. He acquired a number of international patrons, and his works were highly desired for their luminescent and serene sensibility. Today, the artist's work is an integral part of the collections of modern art at major museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Musée d'Art Moderne (Paris). This work will be included in the forthcoming Petitjean Catalogue Raisonné being prepared by S. Kempa.
