Created circa 1900, it belongs to one of Majorelle’s most celebrated series, distinguished by its seamless integration of sculptural bronze and refined marquetry. Signed on the top and executed by the atelier that helped shape modern French design, the table reflects the sophistication of the École de Nancy at its height. The form is conceived as an interplay of graceful movement and botanical rhythm. The triangular top is inset with a composition of water lilies rendered in mahogany, rosewood, maple and ash burl marquetry, each veneer selected to emphasize the delicate texture of the bloom. Patinated bronze mounts emerge organically along the edge and legs, evoking leaves drifting across the surface of a pond. The tapering, slightly arched legs meet at a lower stretcher shaped as a lily pad, reinforcing the aquatic theme that anchors the Nénuphars series. A central figure of the École de Nancy, Majorelle began his career as a painter before assuming leadership of his family’s workshop in 1879. His early work in eighteenth-century revival styles gave way, by the 1890s, to an Art Nouveau vocabulary defined by natural forms, innovative metalwork and sculptural wood construction.
