This Louis XV-style étagère is beautifully designed and executed in brilliant brass and rich green and brown onyx. A stunning example of the Rococo Revival style, it is a symphony of asymmetrical curves and organic forms, comprised of scrolls and acanthus and surmounted by a classical mask. The revival of Rococo, the exuberant style associated with Louis XV and his famed mistress, Madame de Pompadour, began around 1840 and lasted until the turn of the century. It is believed by many that the organic sensuality of Rococo had a direct influence on Art Nouveau.
Étagères, meant to display one’s collection of small decorative objects, became popular furnishings in the 19th century. They were especially suited to the well-appointed Victorian household where a large collection of knick-knacks was considered highly fashionable.
