Details
Exceptionally rare and dating back to the 2nd or 3rd century CE, the carved carnelian gemstone at the center of this ring originates from the Roman Empire. Displaying a rich red hue, the intaglio ring features an intricate carving of the god Jupiter as an eagle, flanked by two depictions of the goddess of victory, Victoria. This historic ring exudes the grandeur of late antiquity. The millennia-old crimson carnelian is beautifully set into a high-carat yellow gold 18th-century mounting, a stunning fusion of ancient and Neoclassical craftsmanship.

Also known as gem carving, the art of intaglio dates back to the 14th century B.C.E. and was practiced by ancient civilizations such as those in Mesopotamia, Assyria, Phoenicia and later in Greece and Rome. The art of gem carving takes years to learn and master, and gem-carved pieces were among the most coveted accessories of ancient civilizations, used to personally mark wax seals.

Intaglio: Circa 2nd-3rd century CE
Setting: 18th century
