An exceptionally rare early work by one of America’s preeminent colorists, this pastel captures Wolf Kahn at his best. Created during his formative sojourn in Venice with his wife, painter Emily Mason, Venice represents the foundation of Kahn’s lifelong fascination with the visual and metaphorical possibilities of water.
Rendered from his studio overlooking the Grand Canal, this pastel depicts the city’s iconic waterway through a modernist lens. While the famed bell tower of St. Mark’s and a passing ferry anchor the scene, Kahn creates a vibrant flurry of light and motion with his energetic linework and radiant palette. Layers of pastel imbue the scene with an atmospheric “fog” effect that would later define his mature style.
