Their powerful architectural elegance, impressive size and rarity make them two of the finest hardstone masterpieces ever created and quite possibly the greatest pair of pietre dure tables in existence.

With their naturalistically rendered flowers and birds, these tabletop panels showcase the particularly fine quality craftsmanship of the Grand Ducal workshops in Florence during the first quarter of the 17th century. Grand Duke Ferdinando I de Medici, one of the most important personages in the annals of art history, established the Grand Ducal Workshop in 1588. The workshop specialized in the art of pietre dure developed from the ancient art of opus sectile, giving rise to the most luxurious and detailed examples of hardstone artistry ever produced. Its patrons were the Popes and Royals of Europe, and the quality of the objects produced in the workshop is without equal. Typically, because of the high level of workmanship the art form requires, pietre dure plaques were crafted in small sizes. The great majority of known examples of pietre dure are a fraction of the size of our grand tables. The combination of pietre dure and extensive use of other rare decorative hardstones such as lapis lazuli and pietra paesina or “ruin marble” meant that these tabletops were surely produced for a wealthy collector.

The tables are further distinguished by their superbly carved bases by Andrea Brustolon, known as the “Michelangelo of wood.” Brustolon was a Venetian wood sculptor known for his exuberant and intricate Baroque furniture. His high Baroque style was influenced by his years studying in Rome, where he was exposed to the sculpture of Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Crafted in the early 18th century, these bases display Brusolon’s unmatched talent for both figural and foliate work, combining cupids, masks and oversized scrolling vines for a grand, ornate effect. Similar furnishings by Brustolon are held in museums worldwide, including the Victoria & Albert Museum, the National Museum of Scotland and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, while the Ca' Rezzonico Museum in Venice features an entire room dedicated to the sculptor.

For approximately 250 years, these tables were part of the famed Stoneleigh Abbey collection owned by the Lord Leigh family. This renowned English country estate inspired Jane Austen to write Mansfield Park. Lord Leigh eventually sold the tables at Christie’s London in 1962, and the pair have stayed in the collection of the same Florentine family who purchased them from Christie's until we recently acquired them.

Our tables are prominently pictured in the important Saul Levy book Il Mobile Veneziano del Settencento. Excavated from the legendary complex that housed Rome's greatest artworks, this magnificent piece bears the distinction of being walked upon by Roman emperors.

The mosaic's intricate geometric patterns showcase the supreme artistry of Roman craftsmen, featuring meticulously arranged tesserae that create a mesmerizing interplay of earth tones and geometric precision. Bordered by bands of varied marble, including precious verde antico, the composition displays repeating diamond and square motifs that demonstrate the mathematical sophistication of imperial Roman design. The later addition of its sumptuous gilt wood base elevates the ancient mosaic with neoclassical grandeur, featuring fluted columns, acanthus leaf capitals and elaborate carved moldings that perfectly complement the Roman aesthetic.

Hadrian's Villa, constructed between 118 and 134 CE, represented the pinnacle of Roman imperial achievement and served as the private retreat of one of history's most cultured emperors. Emperor Hadrian, who reigned from 117 to 138 CE, was a philosopher, poet, architect and military strategist whose villa covered an area larger than Pompeii and housed antiquity's most irreplaceable artworks. The villa's rediscovery in 1461 marked the Renaissance period's most significant archaeological find, though large-scale excavation didn't begin until Cardinal Giuseppe Alessandro Furietti's groundbreaking work in 1736-1738. Cardinal Furietti, both scholar and connoisseur, transformed several of the villa's most celebrated mosaic floor fragments into tabletops, documenting his designs in his seminal work De Musivis (1752), where this very mosaic appears in Plate IV. Following the Cardinal's death, his heirs sold tables from his estate, which were acquired in 1765 by the renowned English architect Robert Adam, who added the elaborate gilt bases before placing them in Britain's most important homes, including Castle Howard, Holkham Hall and Syon House. The items on display were often the finest examples of science and art ever created, as the sheer number of visitors provided the unique opportunity for artists to display the very best they had to offer. This incredible silver-gilt tea table is one such masterpiece, exhibited at not one but two international exhibitions. Created especially for the 1904 St. Louis International Exposition and later exhibited at the Exposition de Liège in 1905, its artistry and craftsmanship rival those of silver works found in any museum in the world.

The one-of-a-kind table was created by the renowned Paris firm of Maison Aucoc, one of the leading goldsmiths and jewelers of the Second Empire and Art Nouveau movements. This tea table, along with the vermeil tea set that it once held, was the sole contribution of the firm to the St. Louis Exposition. It is clear from both its materials and its exceptional level of detail that Aucoc succeeded in making something worthy of this international stage—the judges agreed, as the set won him a Grand Prize. It can be counted among the firm’s masterpieces and is undoubtedly one of the most significant exhibition objects to have ever come on the market.

This table was crafted with both luxury and grandeur in mind. Unlike almost all other tables from this period that were crafted from gilt bronze, this particular example stands apart as one of the select few made from 95% pure silver—the highest standard in the world. Crafted in the Empire style, it is a tour de force of silver design. Palmettes and rosettes encircle the circular top, which is inset with a solid specimen of green marble. A capital column resting on acanthus leaves supports it at the center, while three winged women terminating in lion’s claws support the outer edges.

While the designs for Aucoc’s tea set were inspired by drawings by the great French designer Charles Percier, this table almost certainly took its inspiration from the gilt-bronze mounted furniture of the firm Thomire Duterme et Cie. Led by the great sculptor Pierre-Philippe Thomire, the firm was the preeminent Parisian gilt metal manufacturer of the early 19th century, patronized by Napoléon, King George IV and other royals from around the world. A gilt-bronze mounted malachite table made by Thomire for the Russian Prince Demidoff in 1819, now found in the Pitti Palace (Florence), is supported by similar acanthus-draped winged female torsi as are found in the present table. Aucoc specialized in works that looked back to the great designers of the First Empire, evoking the elegance of a bygone era.

The Maison Aucoc was founded in 1821 by Louis Aucoc Aine as a silversmithing business at 154 Rue St. Honoré in Paris. In 1835, the business moved to Rue de la Paix, and in 1854, he retired and left his son Louis Aucoc in charge of the family firm. During his tenure, Aucoc added jewelry manufacturing to the already successful silver business with great success. The 1870s proved to be a time of great expansion for the company. Aucoc purchased the Maison Lobojois and consolidated both businesses to create La Maison Aucoc, where the legendary René Lalique apprenticed. Aucoc participated in the major international exhibitions of the day with some of the firm's grandest furniture and jewelry creations.

This table was undoubtedly one of the firm’s greatest exhibition contributions. As G. Henry stated in his overview of the St. Louis exposition: “The set will remain one of the most interesting documents of the French Goldsmith of our time and is a great honour to Mr. Aucoc, confirming once again his talent appreciated by the member of the jury who unanimously awarded him the Grand Prize.”

Signed “Andre AUCOC Paris” and hallmarked for .950 standard silver

Circa 1904

39 3/8” diameter x 36” high

References:
Exposition Internationale de Saint Louis (U.S.A) 1904. First emerging at the court of Francis I in the 1530s, this style became increasingly playful over the decades, as demonstrated by the charming and whimsical design of this dressoir. In terms of craftsmanship and quality, it remains in impeccable condition, considering it was crafted over 425 years ago.

Paperwork in the Frick Collection archives lends insight into the history of the sideboard, as well as its mate. The matching dressoir was purchased by the legendary Henry Clay Frick and first reappeared in 1855 in a restorer’s workshop in Marseilles. The two sideboards were almost certainly still a pair at that time, and both likely underwent expert restoration. After restoration, the present dressoir disappeared - due to the relatively small size of homes during this era, many such pairs were split and sold as individual pieces of furniture.

The Frick’s dressoir entered a significant collection in Europe, where it was later bought by famed English dealer Sir Joseph Duveen. This collection of furnishings reportedly cost Duveen $1,500,000, and his purchase was reported by every major newspaper in the Western world. The star of the collection was the “16th-century cabinet,” and Duveen brought it to New York for Mr. Frick’s approval. Frick was immediately enamored with the piece and paid an incredible $110,000 for it in 1917. That price places the Frick dressoir among the most expensive pieces of furniture ever to sell in the history of the world.

To find the mate to such an important and spectacular piece of furniture, particularly in such excellent condition, is truly a once-in-a-lifetime discovery. It is modeled after the legendary pair of commodes made for France’s King Louis XIV by master ébéniste André-Charles Boulle, which is perhaps the most famous and esteemed of all the treasures now housed at the Palace of Versailles. Constructed of ebony and enveloped on all sides with phenomenal tortoiseshell and doré bronze marquetry and ormolu mounts of undeniable skill and artistry, this commode is the pinnacle of furniture craftsmanship.

The original commodes made by Boulle inspired re-interpretations by history’s most esteemed craftsmen. First created and supplied in 1708 by Boulle for Louis XIV’s bed chamber at Versailles, the original pair was one of only four furnishings deemed worthy enough to be rescued from both destruction and sale after the French Revolution. They were placed in the Bibliothèque Mazarine at the Institut de France, where they became known as the Mazarine Commodes, but have since been returned to Versailles.

The commode’s top features a striking example of rare Campan marble, sourced from quarries in the French Pyrenees. From its craftsmanship and materials to its exceptional artistry, it is a work of royal and historic significance that exudes power in each and every detail. The broken pediment at its apex features the simplified royal coat of arms bearing the king’s crown, while the interior is adorned by portraits of the British Royal Family. Placed within the ambassador’s St. Petersburg home, this entirely unique piece of furniture would have been a potent reminder of England's grandeur and political importance.

Relations between England and Russia during this period were at an all-time high. Peter the Great had traveled to England in 1698 as part of his widely known “Grand Embassy” tour, wherein he attempted to gain foreign support against the Ottoman Empire. He spent a period of nearly four months there, meeting with King William III and his court on numerous occasions. Noted academic Arthur MacGregor wrote concerning the impact of the trip, “For two decades following Peter's visit, British influence in Russia reached a peak. It manifested itself in social custom, in craft practice and in ships and naval organization... it reached a significant sector of the population before relations cooled once again and the two nations pulled back from this era of unprecedented cordiality.”

First and foremost, however, it is a reminder of British might and influence. By the reign of King George I, England had come into its own as a world power. Unique in its design, this cabinet is a reflection of the country’s might. It is crafted from the highest-quality solid walnut and burr walnut adorned by gilded lock plates and engraved hinges. The presence of ormolu at its apex and lining the doors was a rarity for this period, and its addition makes manifest the importance of the design.

The outer doors open to reveal multiple interiors, including fifteen separate drawers around a central cupboard; the cupboard doors each bear mezzotint portraits of George I and his father, Ernest Augustus, Elector of Hanover. An etching after the portrait of George I dating to circa 1716 is in London’s Royal Academy. A second, inner pair of doors are adorned by mezzotints of the Prince and Princess of Wales (later Queen Caroline and George II), which are both after portraits by Sir Godfrey Kneller dated 1716 in the Royal Collection. A final portrait is revealed on the very interior of the cabinet, where a mezzotint of Frederick, Anne, Amelia and Caroline, children of the Prince of Wales, resides. An etching (circa 1715-1720) after this portrait can be found in the National Portrait Gallery (London).

Apart from its abundance of royal portraiture, the cabinet features stunning painted decoration, including floral designs as well as clouds, birds and trees in a bucolic motif reminiscent of Eden. Its lower portion is a study in both form and function, featuring a fitted secrétaire-drawer above three additional drawers for storage. The cabinet appears in The Shorter Dictionary of English Furniture by R. Edwards from 1964, a text that is regarded as the bible of British furniture design. Edwards describes it as a “writing cabinet...given by George I to the British Ambassador at the Russian court.”

The cabinet was likely made for the 18th-century German diplomat and writer Friedrich Christian Weber, who represented English interests at the Russian court from 1714 until 1719. Although Weber’s tenure as ambassador was relatively short, while in St. Petersburg, he authored his account entitled Das veraenderte Russland (The Present State of Russia), which was published in three volumes in 1721, 1739 and 1740. It may, however, also have been made for George Douglas, 2nd Earl of Dumbarton, who served as ambassador alongside Weber in 1716. Diplomatic relations ceased between the two countries in 1721.

In 1928, the cabinet appeared for sale at the International Exhibition of Antiques & Works of Art in Olympia. It had previously been in the collection of the Woltner family of Bordeaux, the celebrated vintners who owned the estate Château Laville Haut-Brion and produced wine of the same name. According to the family, Monsieur Woltner was given the cabinet as a gift from an aunt who lived in Russia for many years. After leaving the Woltner collection, the cabinet was acquired by William Berry, 1st Viscount Camrose, a Welsh newspaper publisher of significance.

Circa 1716-1721

42 1/4" wide x 21" deep x 89 3/4" high

References:
The Dictionary of English Furniture, London, rev. ed., 1954, by P. Complete with its original leaves, the table’s circular top is formed from eight separate segments. When the top is rotated, an ingenious swivel mechanism causes the sections to diverge, allowing a set of small or large leaves to be inserted for an adjustable increase in size.

The design for the table was patented by Robert Jupe in 1835, who had envisioned “an improved expanding table so constructed that the sections composing its surface may be caused to diverge from a common center and that the spaces caused thereby may be filled up by inserting leaves or filling pieces.” The first of these fascinating tables were created between 1835 and 1840 during his partnership with John Johnstone and their firm of Johnstone, Jupe & Co. in London. Uniting curvilinear structure and delicate natural motifs, the masterpiece presents as an indoor greenhouse, beautifully rendered in sculpted, ribbed and stained plane tree with glazed upper panels and arching lines reminiscent of flowering branches. Its exceptional brass ornamentation and pierced base tray, executed by Frank Scheidecker, depicts cascading wisteria and koi fish, transforming the structure into a luminous, botanical tableau.

The framework rests on vegetal-form feet and culminates in decorative arches. Morgan, Jacques Doucet and the Emperor of Japan. Hoentschel did not produce the works himself but shaped the creative vision that inspired his skilled artisans. He exported French taste to a global stage through his participation in World’s Fairs and prestigious commissions. Similar botanical and architectural elements to those in this cabinet were showcased in Hoentschel’s celebrated “Salle du Bois” at the 1900 Paris Exposition and again at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair—two of his career's defining achievements. The stone is set into a majestic rosewood base attributed to the renowned firm of Gillows of Lancaster and London, the favorite furniture makers of nobility and royalty throughout England. From the unique patterning of the precious Pietra Paesina to the magnificent carved central column and lion’s paw feet, this table evokes a sense of luxury and privilege.

Pietra Paesina, also known as “ruin marble” and “landscape marble,” hails primarily from the Northern Apennine mountains near Florence, Italy. The stone is believed to have formed approximately 40 to 50 million years ago under infrequent and precise geological conditions whereby limestone deposits deep within the Earth became fractured by the movement of tectonic plates. These fractures were then filled over time with iron and manganese hydroxide deposits from groundwater that were later sealed by the deposition of calcite crystals. When cut, these mineral deposits within the stone formed landscape-like images that appear to resemble ancient ruins or mountainous terrains.

This marvelous stone was discovered sometime in the 16th century and immediately became desired by royalty and wealthy connoisseurs around the world, with the first being the royal Medici of Renaissance Italy. This prestigious family had Florentine artisans craft from this stone furniture and interior ornaments to adorn their palaces. Finding large specimens of Pietra Paesina as displayed in this center table is nearly impossible since most known examples are small enough to fit in your hand. The stone must be cut in order to see if the desired patterning is present, which is not guaranteed. If a pattern is present, by the time it is cut and polished, very little of the stone remains, making the top of this table a true marvel of the natural world.

Furnishings by Gillows are held in the highest regard, and the opportunity to acquire a one-of-a-kind masterpiece by this esteemed company is indeed a rarity. Hardstone pieces such as this were popular among the British aristocracy during the 19th century, as they displayed the wealth and worldly knowledge of those that owned them. Such hardstones were often acquired by those participating in their Grand Tour of Europe. They would be brought back to England and incorporated into some of the finest furnishings of the period, so there is little wonder why Gillows would have been commissioned for such an important work.

Founded in 1730 by Robert Gillow, the Gillows firm operated successfully as a family-owned business well into the 19th century. Originally operating from Lancaster, England, Gillows was especially noted for their quality of workmanship and innovative designs. No other firm in the country had managed to gain as far-reaching and prestigious a level of patronage as that of the Gillows firm, primarily due to the quality and classic nature of their furnishings. The Gillows firm was especially popular with the English nobility and with powerful religious figures throughout the country. Clients included the Earls of Wilton, the Duke of Norfolk, the Earl of Surrey and the Archbishop of York.

Made by one of the most famed furniture makers of the 19th century with one of the rarest stones in the world, this center table is a masterpiece of furniture making worthy of a museum.

Circa 1820

Provenance:
Hailing from an important English titled estate where it has been since it was commissioned.

36" diameter x 29" high
M.S. This body of furniture work is likely connected to Tiffany and Samuel Colman’s 1891 commission for Henry Osborne and Louisine Havemeyer, among the most significant patrons of 19th-century American art.

Louis Comfort Tiffany’s first foray into interior design began with the firm Louis C. Tiffany & Associated Artists (1881–83), founded with Candace Wheeler, Lockwood de Forest and Samuel Colman. Together they introduced a distinctly American decorative style that blended Near Eastern, Japanese and natural motifs with innovative craftsmanship. By the 1890s, Tiffany reorganized the venture as Tiffany Glass & Decorating Company, expanding his experiments in wood, metal and mosaic to furniture design. This chair is an early and exceptionally rare example of Tiffany’s groundbreaking ambition to unite art, nature and craftsmanship across every element of his designs.

35 1/4" high x 18 1/4" wide x 16 1/4" deep
M.S. Crafted of fine golden oak, the suite features eight dining chairs, a versatile dining table, a vitrine, a sideboard, a buffet and a chest that holds the leaves of the dining table. Each piece is detailed with a myriad of lavishly hand-carved figures, including winged lions, fanciful masks, dragons and maidens. The dining table was surely crafted with flexibility in mind, as inside the accompanying chest are nine leaves which allow the table to expand an additional seven feet in length from its original square dimensions. In terms of size and craftsmanship, this suite is a shining example of Victorian furniture.

The period between 1880 and 1920 is often regarded as the “golden age” of American furniture craftsmanship, not only for the quality of the pieces, but also for the characteristic golden lacquers applied to finished furnishings. Overall prosperity following the American Civil War gave rise to wealthier families, larger homes and, hence, a desire for larger, more ornate furnishings for those homes.

Oak became popular during this time, due to a shortage of available walnut. In particular, the New York firm of Robert J. Horner is known for creating some of the greatest, handcrafted oak furnishings of this period. Horner was a clerk at a curtain shop before opening his furnishing business in 1885. Although the firm lasted only 30 years, the pieces that were produced during that time displayed high-level carving and handmade craftsmanship that was seldom seen during the Victorian Age, which was largely marked by mechanized work and industrialism. Today, items crafted by Horner are highly desirable and sought by collectors of premium Victorian furniture.

Circa 1885

Chairs: 19 1/2” wide x 47 3/4” high
Table (without leaves): 53” wide x 53” length x 30 1/4” high
Table (with leaves): 140 1/2” length
Sideboard: 74 1/2” wide x 25 3/4” deep x 48” high
Buffet: 44” wide x 18” deep
Vitritne: 55 1/2" wide x 19 1/2" deep x 81 3/4" high
Leaf Chest: 54 1/2" wide x 21" deep x 21" deep

M.S. Diminutive in size, the fascinating table was designed as a model to demonstrate Hawkins’ innovative patent screw movement to visitors of the Exhibition – six million people in total over five months. It was exhibited again a century later at the Victoria & Albert Museum during the Festival of Britain, an event intended “to symbolise two main qualities of the national character: realism and strength on the one hand, and, on the other, independence and imagination” (Catalogue of the Exhibition, 1951, p.117). To this day, the miniature masterpiece demonstrates the quest of English furniture makers to combine technical innovation with superb craftsmanship.

Displaying exceptional ingenuity, Hawkins’ wind-out screw mechanism allowed one to extend the table’s base to accommodate concentric leaves with the simple crank of a handle. It is based on the inventive expanding table originally designed by Robert Jupe in 1835, which used a swivel mechanism to separate sections of the tabletop and allow for segmented leaves to be inserted. Hawkins’ tabletop, on the other hand, extends outwards directly from the center in order to accommodate additional leaves around its diameter. This unique design allowed the mechanism to also smoothly operate on rectangular tables, which could be wound out from the middle to allow for more table space.

Hawkins was not alone in his endeavor to combine the technical merits of engineering and mechanics with the most artful pursuit of cabinetmaking. The first half of the 19th century saw a prolific increase in the popularity of applying new ideas to traditional furniture principles, which allowed furniture to serve many purposes. The resulting “patent” furniture was practical and refined, though few were as innovative as Hawkins’ prodigious design.

Carved with the year of the Exhibition on the beautifully designed pedestal base, the table is a testament to the significance of this innovation. The model is mentioned in detail in the catalog of the Great Exhibition of 1851, the first international exhibition of industry, manufacturing, and science. Held at London’s dazzling Crystal Palace, its visitors were treated to exhibits from around the globe, including feats of engineering, innovations in industry, and marvels of design. Queen Victoria herself was a frequent visitor, along with her husband, Prince Albert, and others including Charlotte Brontë, Lewis Carroll, Charles Darwin, Alfred Tennyson and Charles Dickens.

Pieces such as this that were made specifically for this seminal exhibition are among the most valuable to be found. Before the age of modern advertising, international exhibitions were the sole opportunity for craftsmen and inventors to market their wares to a mass audience. Thus, each piece was masterfully designed and painstakingly crafted down to the smallest detail, in the hopes that it would make a lasting impression on critics and attendees alike. Without question, this expanding table displays the finest craftsmanship and artistry, and is an unparalleled specimen of English ingenuity and original design.

The table's mechanism is illustrated and described in great detail in the Official Descriptive & Illustrated Catalogue of the Great Exhibition of 1851.

Circa 1851
13” high x 24” diameter

M.S. The first armoires appeared in France during the latter half of the 17th century and were most often the dominant feature of the home. These large cupboards were used to hold a family’s belongings from linens to clothing to silver and even food. Cabinetmakers drew their inspiration from the cupboards of Italy, Germany and Spain, but by the reign of Louis XV, the French armoire had reached its height of popularity and possessed a distinctly French flair.

Originating in France in the 18th century, the French Provincial style was born of the ornate Louis XV and Rococo. However, it was crafted by furniture makers in the provinces, outside of the cities. By nature, its beauty relies more on form, function and available materials, and less on ostentatious decorative elements, such as gilding or intricate marquetry. Created circa 1900, it belongs to one of Majorelle’s most celebrated series, distinguished by its seamless integration of sculptural bronze and refined marquetry. Signed on the top and executed by the atelier that helped shape modern French design, the table reflects the sophistication of the École de Nancy at its height.

The form is conceived as an interplay of graceful movement and botanical rhythm.
