Details
Crafted during the rise of early Christendom, this extraordinary pendant from Rebecca Rau’s THEN & NOW collection centers on an authentic high-karat gold Byzantine cross dating from circa 700–1000 CE. The cross form, symbolizing the five wounds of Christ, was traditionally worn by clergy or the devout elite as a talisman of protection, prayer and faith. Adorned with a 0.97-carat Old Mine cut diamond, 0.86 carats of pear shaped color-change garnets, 0.48 carat of round pink tourmalines and an iridescent Tahitian black pearl, the pendant evokes the splendor of Byzantine devotion. Suspended from a finely woven 18K yellow gold Italian foxtail chain, the work harmonizes sacred symbolism with contemporary craftsmanship.

Designer Rebecca Rau, a fourth-generation antiquaire, is celebrated for uniting archaeological authenticity with refined modern design. Her THEN & NOW collection reimagines ancient objects as wearable works of art, preserving their historical resonance while elevating them through elegant composition. Comparable Byzantine crosses reside in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The British Museum.
