This Art Deco-period French mystery clock features a stunning design inspired by Eastern cultures and the natural world. A brilliantly hued piece of coral rises from the center of the clock’s dial, while a charming carnelian koi fish and blue lacquer lotus flower are set into the clock’s “pond.” The pond rotates with the help of the clock movement, guiding the diminutive aquatic creature along the edge of the white enamel dial as if by magic. The time is indicated by the fish's position in relation to the gold Arabic numerals along the basin's edge.
Completing this ingenious mystery clock's design is its exquisite jade base, which evokes the shape of the traditional Chinese koro, or incense burner. Overall, the piece represents the elaborate Eastern designs that became highly fashionable during the Art Deco era. A very similar chinoiserie mystery clock crafted of coral and jade made by Cartier is currently held in the Cartier Collection and was recently exhibited at the Grand Palais in Paris.
