A horologic masterpiece of precision and beauty, this neoclassical marble and ormolu mantel clock is an extraordinary example of late 18th-century French clockmaking by the famed Jean-Nicolas Schmit of Paris. In this treasure, two ormolu-gilded pillars emerge from the base to brace the central clock’s face. A pendulum hangs, featuring blue, red and white detailing encircling a central classical profile. Crowned by a miniature gilt figure of the goddess Athena, who wears classical dress and carries a shield emblazoned with the face of Medusa, the mantle clock exudes a neoclassical luxury.
Regarded as one of the most masterful Parisian clockmakers of his period, Schmit is remembered best for his clocks in the luxurious Louis XVI style. Selected as a maître-horologer in August 1781, Schmit’s timepieces are distinguished by their artistic design and technical quality.
